Women's Volleyball Sweeps Buc Blast Tournament

BELOIT, Wis.- The Illinois Tech women's volleyball team (4-1) had a very strong weekend in Beloit, Wisconsin, sweeping the competition at the Buc Blast Tournament. Illinois Tech defeated Rockford University (3-0), Beloit College (3-2), Alverno College (3-0), and UW-Marathon County (3-0) over the two-day event.

How It Happened

  • Friday's match against Rockford was controlled by Tech from the start, taking set one 25-12. Set two was won 25-23 before the Scarlet Hawks won in convincing fashion in set three (25-16). Irena Grauzinis led Tech with 11 kills, Chelsea Badiola had 15 digs, and Adrianne Walther tallied 17 assists, five kills, and recorded a .556 hitting percentage.
  • The victory over Beloit came in come-from-behind fashion, as Tech dropped sets one and two 25-21 and 25-20. Illinois Tech then used a tough third set (26-24 victory) to ignite a strong offensive attack in sets four and five, winning 25-18 and 15-6. Grauzinis (18) and Jelena Vujicic (11) each totaled double-digit kills, Walther added 35 assists, and Badiola added 23 digs.
  • Tech's sweep of Alverno was equally impressive, as the Scarlet Hawks featured a balanced attack and a solid .244 team hitting percentage. Vujacic led the team with ten kills, while Grauzinis (eight) and Walther (six, 24 assists) each tallied over five. Tech held the Inferno to below 20 points in all three sets.
  • A 25-19, 25-20, 25-22 win over UW_Marathon County capped off the weekend. Grauzinis completely dominated the match, tallying 17 kills and a .275% clip over the three sets. The team talled 11 aces, including five from Cassie Hansen

Scarlet Hawk Standouts

  • Grauzinis owerwhelmed defenses all tournament, tallying 54 kills 3.86 kills/set
  • Walther's all-around play was also of note, as the senior setter recorded 102 assists (7.29/set), 32 digs (2.29/set), and 18 kills. 
  • Badiola led the back row with 60 digs (4.29/set)
  • Vujicic (31 kills) also bolstered the offensive attack

  • Dating back to last season, the Scarlet Hawks have won 12 of the last 15 matches
