Tech Splits In First Day of Illinois College Tournament

JACKSONVILLE, Ill.- The Illinois Institute of Technology women's volleyball team competed in the Illinois College Tournament on Friday evening, defeating Principia and falling to host Illinois College. Both games went four sets.

How it Happened- Principia Match

  • Tech struggled out of the gate in set one, falling behind 12-4. However, the Scarlet Hawks fought their way back, going on several large runs to tie it at 17-17 before pulling ahead and winning 25-22.
  • Set two was back-and-forth throughout. With the score tied at 25-23, two Principia attack errors gave Tech a 25-23 win.
  • In set three, Principia took control, leading most of the way and winning 25-15.
  • The Scarlet Hawks regained momentum in set four, building a huge 13-3 early and never looking back en route to a 25-16 win.

How it Happened- Illinois College Match

  • The Scarlet Hawks picked up where they left off from the earlier match, never trailing against Illinois College in set one for a 25-21 win.
  • The second set was a bit of a different story, as IC build an early 10-3 lead. Tech would play well the rest of the set, but ran out of time as IC won 25-20.
  • Set three was almost a carbon copy of set two, as Illinois College went up 10-4 early. The Scarlet Hawks would once again cut the deficit, but IC never relinquished the lead in a 25-19 win.
  • Five straight attack errors to being the match doomed the Hawks in the fourth set. Tech would make thing interesting, but never fully recovered from the slow start in a 25-20 defeat.

Scarlet Hawk Standouts

  • Jelena Vujicic led the Hawks in kills on the day with 18, including a Tech-high 11 against IC.
  • Elizabeth Woltman continued to play well after returning to action last week, tallying 15 kills and a match-best .333 hitting percentage against Principia.
  • Clare Fraeyman tallied 10 kills against IC, while Irena Grauzinis led Tech with 12 kills against Principia.
  • Five players tallied 20 or more digs in a match: Grauzinis (23), Adriane Walther (21), and Chelsea Badiola (21) against Principia, and both Walther (24) and Badiola (20) did it again versus IC.
  • Walther tallied 72 assists on the day.

Stats to Know

  • Tech lost to IC despite having more assists (41-38) and digs (87-81).
  • The Scarlet Hawks tallied a season-high 103 digs against Principia.
  • Tech posted 16 aces on the day and nine against Principia.
