Women's Lacrosse Earns First Program Win in Dramatic Fashion

Chicago, Illinois - The Scarlet Hawks women's lacrosse team made history as they defeated Defiance College 10-9 on Wednesday afternoon, marking their first ever win for the program.  They have made incredible strides since last year's inaugural season.

The Hawks went down 1-0 just two minutes into the contest but quickly responded with a goal of their own as Florencia Carrerou converted her first goal of the season.  After going down 3-1, Carrerou once again found the back of the net and the Hawks headed into halftime with a one-goal deficit.

The second half proved to be an exciting one as the teams traded goals throughout.  Tech finally earned its first lead of the game with just 1:37 remaining as a cutting Isabel Fitzpatrick Meyers received a feed from Chelsea Badiola and beat goalkeeper Catherine Bledsoe, putting the Scarlet Hawks ahead 9-8.  Defiance wasn't done as they tied it up less than a minute later.  The next very important draw control was handled by Junior Shacara Ledbetter at which time Head Coach Kirk Lamitie quickly called a timeout to draw up the game winner.  Coming out of the timeout and after briefly losing possession, Heather Bennett fought hard for the crucial ground ball and was fouled simultaneously, awarding her with a free-position shot.  She hammered it away with just seconds remaining on the clock to take the 10-9 lead.  It was Bennett's third goal of the game, all coming in the second half.

Carrerou finished the game with 4 goals, 4 ground balls, and 3 draw controls while Bennett also recroded a hat trick.  Meyers, Badiola, and Cassandra Reineke added the other 3 Hawk goals while Nene Sanankou was crucial on the draw and also contributed with 3 ground balls.

The Hawks are now 1-1 on the season and will play their first road game on Tuesday March 17th at Illinois Wesleyan College.
