Season Ends on Third Day of 2021 NACC Baseball South Division Tournament

LISLE, ILL.—The third day of the 2021 NACC Baseball South Division Tournament pitted Illinois Institute of Technology against Benedictine (Ill.) at The Sports Complex in Lisle, Illinois on Sunday afternoon. The Scarlet Hawks, who defeated the Eagles 8-7 on Friday, held a 4-1 advantage after the second frame before Benedictine registered 14 unanswered runs to close the game en route to a 15-4 (7 innings) score. 

Illinois Tech concludes the 2021 season with a 19-10 record while Benedictine advanced to the NACC South Division Championship against top-seeded Aurora with a 29-12 mark. Despite playing just 29 games in 2021, the Scarlet Hawks notched the most wins in a single season (19) since their 24-11 record in 2015. 

Benedictine 15, Illinois Tech 4 (7 Innings)

Brandon Bennitt led Illinois Tech at the plate with a 3-for-4 outing that included three doubles and two RBI. The Scarlet Hawks utilized six different pitchers. Starter Roberto Carselle allowed six hits and nine runs over 3.0 innings, but only three of those runs were earned. The Scarlet Hawks defense stuggled to back up the pitching staff, as they accumulated six errors in the contest.

Kevin Bushnell paced Benedictine (Ill.) at the plate with a 2-for-3 outing that included a three-run home run that put the game out of reach at 12-4 in the fifth inning. 

Playing their final games in a Scarlet Hawks uniform are fifth-year seniors Ted Howell, Ryan Cantlin, and Matthew McMullen. Fourth-year seniors Jacob Sorenson, David Navarro, Nick Bledsoe, Claudio LoBraico, Zack Pacer, Michael Courtney, Ian Duke and Roberto Carselle each have an option to return for a fifth season due to the NCAA COVID-19 Blanket Waiver.
