Men's Basketball Wins Thriller Against MSOE 58-56

Chicago, Ill. - Calvin Schmitz hit a jumper with 21 seconds remaining, propelling the Illinois Tech men's basketball team to a 58-56 win over MSOE Saturday night at the Keating Sports Center. The Scarlet Hawks improved to 2-6 on the season, and evened up their NACC record at 1-1. The Raiders dropped to 5-3 overall (1-1 NACC).

Schmitz finished with 17 points and six rebounds to help lead the Hawks, shooting 60% from both the field and from three-point range.

How It Happened:

First Half

  • The teams went scoreless for over three minutes to start the game until Deonte Vanselow hit a jumper at the 16:42 mark to put the Raiders up 2-0.
  • After trading baskets, the Hawks went on an 11-2 run, capped off by an Ahmad Muhammad three-pointer, giving them a 14-6 lead.
  • A Michael Pitrof layup midway through the half completed a 7-2 run for the Raiders, pulling them within three at 16-13.
  • The Hawks responded with an 8-2 run, culminated by a Milos Dugalic layup at the 5:49 mark to push the Hawks lead to nine at 24-15.
  • After a Caden Gigstad layup gave the Hawks a 10 point lead, Pitrof converted a layup and a jumper to cut the Raiders deficit to six entering the half, trailing 29-23.
  • Schmitz paced the Hawks with 11 points. Dugalic had six rebounds.
  • Pitrof had eight points for the Raiders.

Second Half

  • Ty Miklowski made a pair of baskets in the first minute to pull the Raiders within two at 29-27.
  • A Gigstad three-pointer and a Kyle Hornacek jumper put the Hawks up 43-37 at the 12:30 mark.
  • A Muhammad three-pointer at the 10:19 mark again put the Hawks up by six, 49-43.
  • A Pitrof free throw at 5:50 completed a 9-0 run for the Raiders, putting them up 52-49.
  • Layups by Gigstad and Otis Reale put the Hawks in front 56-53 with 1:24 remaining.
  • CJ Cappuccio drained a three-pointer with one minute remaining to tie the game at 56.
  • After Gigstad missed a layup with 38 seconds remaining, he secured his own rebound, setting the stage for the Schmitz game-winner with 21 seconds remaining.
  • A Dugalic block of Pitrof with five seconds remaining, and a Gigstad steal with one second remaining sealed the 58-56 victory for the Scarlet Hawks.
  • Schmitz had six points in the half, with four other Hawks putting up five points each.
  • Miklowski paced the Raiders with nine points.

Scarlet Hawk Standouts

  • Schmitz led the Hawks with 17 points on 60 percent shooting from the field and from three-point range. He also had six rebounds and two assists.
  • Muhammad finished with 11 points, six rebounds and two assists.
  • Dugalic had eight points, 12 rebounds, two blocks, one assist and one steal.

Raiders Watch

  • Pitrof had 11 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals.
  • Miklowski finished with 11 points and four rebounds.
  • Will Busch had six points and eight rebounds off the bench for the Raiders.

Inside the Box Score

  • The Hawks finished shooting 33.3% from three-point range (8/24), while the Raiders finished at 25% (5/20).
  • Team fouls were fairly even, with the Hawks committing 13 fouls to the Raiders 12.
