Men’s Lacrosse Scores 17 Goals in Senior Day Victory Over Marian

Chicago, Ill. - On a hot and sunny day at Stuart Field, the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks men's lacrosse team took on the Marian University Sabres in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) action. 

Picking up a victory on senior day, the Hawks (5-5, 2-2) recorded a 17-8 victory over the Sabres (8-5, 1-4) after having a 7-0 run in the fourth quarter. 

Senior Day - Before the game, the Hawks honored their 12 seniors: Zane Handy, Reed Tangeman, Ryan Arbour, Creighton Gaff, Kaleab Uebelher, Aidan Gans, Spencer Meace, Juan Bohorquez, James Enterline, Jeremy Cohen, Nehemyah Green, and Cornelio Estrella. Congratulations to these seniors for their careers as Scarlet Hawks. Thank you for your contributions both on and off the field.   

First Quarter (Illinois Tech 2 - Marian 2)

  • The Hawks got on the board first as Yano Porter scored off a Jonathan Vitale assist. Vitale, who was behind the goal, passed the ball off to Porter. Porter juked one defender before placing his shot into the back of the net at 10:55.

  • With 7:44 on the clock, Reed Tangeman put the Hawks up 2-0. After receiving the ball on the Hawks defensive half, right before mid-field, Tangemen took off running into open space on the offensive side. With no defender on him, Tangeman was able to look up and see the Sabers keeper out of the net. Tangeman fired off a shot from distance and scored. 

  • At 1:46 the Sabres scored their first goal from Nate Htwe. The Sabres then tied the game at 2-2 with a goal by Trevor Stachowski with 29 seconds remaining before the end of the quarter. 

Second Quarter (Illinois Tech 7 - Marian 4)

  • One minute into the second quarter, the Sabres took the lead with a goal by Connor Fitzgerald. 

  • Tangeman scored his second of the game at 12:07 to tie the game at 3-3. Tangeman received the ball, juked his defender, and ripped off a shot, sending the ball right over the Sabres goalkeepers' shoulder and into the back of the net. 

  • The Sabres once again took the lead with a goal by Stachowski at the 11:01 mark. 

  • At 10:05, Porter picked up his second goal. The goal came as the Sabres goalkeeper was out of the goal trying to inbound the ball. As he sent the ball into play, Porter was able to intercept the pass and score in a wide open net to make the game 4-4. 

  • The Hawks went up 6-5 at 6:48 when Vitale scored from a Jackson Brass assist. Brass was able to pass the ball into Vitale, who was right in front of the goal. Vitale was able to turn and place the ball into the goal to give the Hawks the lead. 

  • The lead was brief as the Sabres scored at the 3:28 mark in a man-up situation to make the game 5-5. 

  • Ty Dwyer then scored an unassisted goal for the Hawks at 2:35.

  • Another man-up goal happened at 1:30 for the Sabres, tying the game at 6-6.

  • Brass scored his first of the game with 44 seconds in the clock until halftime to give the Hawks the lead for the final time 

  • With 21 seconds remaining Tangeman picked up his third goal, recording a hat-trick, after making a run straight in front of the goal with the ball, right past two defenders, and scoring with a shot past the goalkeeper. 

  • Then, a second before the halftime horn went off, Vitale scored his second goal. Controlling the ball off a bounce, Vitale quickly spun and launched a shot right past the keeper for the hawks ninth goal of the game. At halftime, the Hawks led the Sabres 9-6. 

Third Quarter (Illinois Tech 1 - Marian 2)

  • Hayden Poless scored for the Sabres at the 12:59 mark.

  • Tangeman added another goal to his total with 9:38 remaining in the third quarter from a Porter assist. Porter, who was behind the goal, saw Tangeman who was making a run straight towards the goal. As soon as Tangeman had control of the ball, he sent it flying into the net to make it a 10-7 game in favor of the Hawks. 

  • At the 6:11 mark, Fitzgerald scored the Sabres final goal of the match. 

Fourth Quarter (Illinois Tech 7 - Marian 0)

  • In the fourth quarter, Brass scored an unassisted goal at 13:23.

  • Tangeman scored his final goal of the game at the 12:40 mark, making the score 12-8.

  • Brass then scored back to back goals for the Hawks. The first coming at 12:17 as he placed the ball into the lower left corner. Brass then scored again, earning him a hat-trick, at the 7:51 mark off a Ryan Arbour assist. 

  • Alexander Stokrp joined in on the goal scoring with a goal off a Brass assist at 5:07.  Here, the Hawks led 15-8. 

  • Vitale scored his final goal of the game at 4:36 off a Diego Sosa assist.

  • Spencer Meace closed out the game with the final goal at 3:06. Meace was able to make a run right at the goal and place the ball into the back of the net to give the Hawks their 17-8 victory. 

Scarlet Hawk Standouts

  • Reed Tangeman led the Hawks in goals with 5. Tangeman finished with 7 shots, 6 on goal, and 1 caused turnover.

  • Jackson Brass followed in goals with 4. Brass led the Hawks in assists with 2. Brass tallied 9 shots, 6 on goal, 2 ground balls, and 4 caused turnovers.

  • Jonathan Vitale picked up a hat-trick. Vitale closed out the game with 1 assist, 6 shots, 4 on goal. 

  • Zane Handy made 15 saves in the net for the Hawks. 

Sabres Standouts

  • Connor Fitzgerald recorded a hat-trick for the Sabres. Fitzgerald finished with 7 shots, 4 on goal and 2 ground balls. 

  • Alec Jankowski led the Sabres in ground balls with 7.

Inside the Box Score

  • The Hawks finished with 45 shots, 27 on goals, while the Sabres finished with 44 shots, 23 on goal. 

  • Marian tallied 22 ground balls versus Illinois Tech's 20. 

  • The Hawks had 20 turnovers and the Sabres had 16. 

  • The Hawks were a perfect 22-of-22 in clears while the Sabres were 17-of-19. 

  • 15-of-the-27 faceoffs went in favor of the Hawks.

Four games remain on the Hawks schedule for the 2023 season. The Hawks hit the road for their next two games before returning to Stuart Field to close out the season. On Wednesday, the Hawks will be back in action when they travel to River Forest, Ill. to take on the Concordia University Chicago Cougars in NACC action at 3:00 PM.
