Men's Volleyball Drops Three Sets to Saint Xavier

Chicago, Ill. - On the road to take on the Saint Xavier University Cougars, the Illinois Tech men's volleyball team competed in a non-conference match on Friday. The Hawks (3-6, 0-1 NACC) fell to the Cougars (6-1, 3-0 CACC) 3-0. 

How it Happened

  • The first set saw the Hawks start off with the lead before the Cougars picked up 5 straight points to take a 5-3 lead. After trailing briefly, the Hawks tied the set up at 10-10. Immediately though, the Cougars took the lead back and held it for the remainder of the set, raking set one 25-19 over the Hawks. 

  • After a brief tie at 2-2 to begin set two, the Cougars took the lead. The Hawks would go on to pick up 6 straight points during the set to tie things up at 13-13. . The two sides would tie things up immediately after at 14-14 before the Cougars began to run with the score. At the end of the set, the Hawks fell once again 25-19.

  • The Hawks took the early lead in set three before the Cougars caught up and tied it at 7-7. From there, four more ties would happen with multiple lead changes before the Cougars once again ran with the lead for a final time. At the end of set three, the Hawks fell 25-17 to the Cougars to end the match. 

Scarlet Hawk Standouts

  • Riley Laite led the Hawks with 7 kills and 2 block assists. Laite picked up 5 digs. 

  • Alec Donald led with 6 digs. 

  • Elijah Johsnon led with 14 assists and 4 service aces. 

Cougar Standouts

  • Vejas Cuplinskas led the Cougars with 17 kills.

  • Jake McClain followed with 10 kills.

  • Andres Velez picked up 19 digs to lead the Cougars.

Inside the Box Score

  • Between all three sets, the Cougars picked up 41 kills compared to the Hawks 21. 

  • The Hawks tallied 75 total attacks while the Cougars had 84.

Head Coach Mike Oswald's Comments

"It was another night where we got better. We took some of the movements and positioning that we tweaked on Thursday and put it into our match. We definitely had our struggles against St X's high powered serving and offense but it was a great opportunity and I think we took advantage of it!"

The Hawks return to the court tomorrow when they take on North Park in a non-conference match-up. First serve is scheduled for 3:00p.m.
