Milwaukee, Wisc. – The Illinois Tech women's basketball team scored their first program victory since February of 2019, as the Scarlet Hawks, behind a 39-point night from Julia Bucci, defeated the Mount Mary University Blue Angels 74-55 Wednesday night. The Hawks evened their season record to 1-1. The Blue Angels open the season 0-1.
The last game in the win column for the team took place on February 16 of 2019, a 69-58 victory at home against Rockford. The Hawks went winless in the 2019-2020 campaign, and last year's season was canceled due to the pandemic.
How It Happened:
First Quarter
- The Hawks got out to an early 7-1 lead on the strength of two three-point baskets by Bucci.
- Jessica Weaver made a couple layups to extend the Hawks lead to 14-2.
- The Blue Angels knocked down four free throws late in the quarter to close out the first period trailing 14-6.
Second Quarter
- Three different Hawks players scored to start the quarter, extending their lead to 20-6.
- Mount Mary scored six points sandwiched around a Bucci three-pointer to cut their deficit to 23-12.
- Bucci added a pair of three-pointers later in the quarter to help the Hawks enter the half leading 39-21.
Third Quarter
- The Blue Angels scored the first six points of the quarter to move within 12 points at 39-27.
- Bucci countered with five baskets in the period, including two more three-pointers as the Hawks closed out the period leading 56-38.
Fourth Quarter
- The Blue Angels mounted a rally, getting within 10 points midway through the 4th quarter.
- The Hawks responded with an 8-0 run to push their lead to 70-52, and eventually closing out the game with a 74-55 win.
Scarlet Hawk Standouts
- Bucci finished with 39 points on 8-12 from three-point range, and also led with 12 rebounds
- Weaver finished with 10 points and eight rebounds.
- Erin Nelson with six points and nine rebounds.
- Deriniece Moton handed out five assists and pulled down nine rebounds.
Blue Angels Watch
- Talesa Campbell lead Mount Mary with 28 points.
- Natalie McDermott had nine points and eight rebounds.
- Brianna Duke had 10 rebounds to go with her six points and five assists.
