Scarlet Hawks Down Blackburn 81-79 For Second Consecutive Victory

Chicago, Ill. – Deriniece Moton made a layup basket and converted the and-1 with eight seconds remaining to propel the Illinois Tech women's basketball team to their second consecutive victory, defeating Blackburn College 81-79 Friday evening at the Keating Sports Center. The Scarlet Hawks improved their record to 2-1 on the season. The Beavers fell to 0-2.

How It Happened:

First Quarter

  • Neither team was able to get an extended lead in the opening quarter, as the Beavers led 21-19 at the close.
  • Julia Bucci led the Hawks with nine points in the quarter, with Moton adding six points.
  • Aryanna Harris had six points in the quarter for the Beavers, with Taliyah Davis chipping in five points.

Second Quarter

  • The Hawks were able to gain more traction in the second quarter, outscoring the Beavers 21-15 to take a 40-36 lead into halftime.
  • Bucci added 10 more points in the quarter, including 5-5 from the line. The Hawks were 8-11 in free throws in the quarter.
  • Davis paced the Beavers with four points in the quarter.

Third Quarter

  • The Beavers chipped away in the third quarter, outscoring the Hawks 19-18 to close their deficit to 58-55 entering the fourth quarter. Harris added eight points in the frame, while Hanna Box had six points.
  • Allie Sillo led Illinois Tech with six points in the quarter, while three other Hawks chipped in four points each.

Fourth Quarter

  • Harris made a layup with 11 seconds remaining to give the Beavers a 79-77 lead, forcing Illinois Tech to call a timeout. On the ensuing inbounds, Moton drove the lane and put up a shot off the glass that went in, while being fouled in the process. Moton converted the free throw to give the Hawks an 80-79 lead with eight seconds remaining. Moton added another free throw for the final margin of victory, 81-79.
  • Moton finished with 17 points in the quarter for the Hawks. Erin Nelson pulled down five rebounds in the final frame.
  • Harris poured in twelve points in the fourth quarter for the Beavers.

  • Moton finished with 30 points, seven rebounds and four steals.
  • Bucci added 21 points with six rebounds.
  • Nelson had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

  • Harris finished with 29 points, 10 rebounds and five assists.
  • Davis had 15 points.
  • Box had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
