Women's Basketball Falls to MSOE 57-38

Chicago, Ill. - A good first quarter for the Illinois Tech women's basketball team was negated by sluggish shooting and turnovers in the second quarter, and the Scarlet Hawks were unable to recover in their 57-38 loss to MSOE Saturday afternoon at the Keating Sports Center. The Hawks dropped to 2-5 overall(0-2 NACC). The Raiders improved to 3-1(2-0 NACC).

The Hawks only trailed by four points after the first quarter, but 1-8 shooting and 10 turnovers in the second quarter pushed the Raiders lead to 15 points at the half, en route to their 19 point margin of victory.

How It Happened:

First Quarter

  • The Hawks started the game with an 8-3 run, culminated by a Deriniece Moton jumper at the 6:31 mark.
  • A Nina Perl layup with 4:50 remaining completed a 6-0 run for the Raiders, giving them the lead at 9-8.
  • An Allie Sillo three-pointer and a Julia Bucci layup gave the Hawks a 13-11 lead with 2:08 remaining.
  • The Raiders would score 8 of the next 10 points the rest of the way to close out the quarter leading 19-15.
  • Bucci paced the Hawks with five points. Raekyiah Williams had eight points for MSOE.

Second Quarter

  • A Chloe Kurkjain three-pointer with 3:40 remaining in the quarter completed an 11-0 run for MSOE, boosting their lead to 30-15.
  • An Erin Nelson layup and a pair of free throw by Moton cut the Raiders lead to 30-19.
  • A pair of jumpers by the Raiders Wendy Guan put MSOE back up by 15 at the half, 34-19.
  • Moton and Nelson each had two points for the Hawks. Guan and Nicole Levine each had four points for the Raiders.

Third Quarter

  • Moton hit a three-pointer and a jumper in the first three minutes of the quarter to cut the Hawks deficit to 10 points at 34-24.
  • MSOE would outscore the Hawks 14-5 the rest of the period to lead 48-29 heading into the fourth quarter.
  • Moton and Bucci each had five points for Illinois Tech. Emily Runey led MSOE with seven points.

Fourth Quarter

  • In a low-scoring fourth quarter, each team traded baskets and free throws and tallied nine points each.
  • A Jessica Weaver layup with 1:22 remaining capped off the scoring for the Scarlet Hawks, en route to their 57-38 loss.
  • Four players had two points each for the Hawks. Grace Ellington had six points the Raiders.

Scarlet Hawk Standouts

  • Bucci finished with 11 points, eight rebounds and three steals.
  • Moton finished with nine points, 12 rebounds, four assists, four steals and one block.

Raiders Watch

  • Williams paced the Raiders with 13 points.
  • Runey added nine points and four assists.
  • Ellington had eight points, three rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Inside the Box Score

  • The Hawks shot 26.7% from three point range (4-15); the Raiders shot 17.6% (3-17).
  • The Hawks committed nine fouls in the contest; the Raiders had 10 fouls.
  • The Hawks were 6-8 from the free throw stripe (75%); The Raiders were 4-8 (50%).
  • MSOE scored 24 points off of 28 Illinois Tech turnovers; the Hawks scored five points off of 16 MSOE turnovers.
  • Moton led the Hawks in playing time with 33 minutes. Runey led MSOE with 23 minutes played.
