4th Quarter Dooms Scarlet Hawks Women's Basketball in 68-62 Loss to Dominican

Chicago, Ill. - Despite holding a four-point lead heading into the final frame, the Illinois Tech women's basketball team couldn't overcome a hot-shooting fourth quarter by Dominican University, as the Stars pulled away for a 68-62 conference victory Tuesday night at the Keating Sports Center. The Scarlet Hawks dropped to 3-8 overall(0-5 NACC). The Stars improved to 2-11(1-6 NACC).

The Stars shot a blistering 75% from the field in the fourth quarter, including 4 of 6 from three-point range. They also converted on all six of their free throws.

In their first game since January 2nd, the Hawks started out strong, going on a 7-0 run late in the first quarter to take a 21-13 lead heading into the second quarter. Allie Sillo paced the Hawks with seven points in the opening frame.

The two teams traded baskets in the first part of the second quarter, before the Stars went on a 5-0 run to tie the game at 26 with 4:54 to go in the half. The Hawks responed with a 6-0 run to close out the quarter, giving the Hawks a 32-26 lead heading into the break. Julia Bucci added six points in the second quarter.

Dominican would get as close as one point down midway through the third quarter, but the Hawks responded by outscoring the Stars 8-5 the rest of the quarter to take a 44-40 lead into the fourth quarter. Jessica Weaver tallied six points in the quarter to pace the Hawks.

The Stars took over the game with a 10-0 run to open the fourth quarter. The Hawks could get no closer than three points the rest of the way. Alysha Markley and Kamryn Woods had 11 and 10 points respectively for Dominican in the quarter. Deriniece Moton led the Hawks with eight points in the fourth.

Scarlet Hawk Standouts

  • Bucci finished with 20 points, six rebounds, four steals and five assists. She was also a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line.
  • Moton and Sillo each finished with 10 points and five rebounds.
  • Catherine Klemp had a career high nine points, and paced the Hawks with eight rebounds.
  • Weaver finished with 11 points on the evening.

Stars Watch

  • Markley paced the Stars with 27 points to go along with four steals.
  • Woods added 25 points, five rebounds and three steals.

Inside the Box Score

  • The Hawks shot 30% from three point range (3-10); the Stars shot 38.5% (10-26).
  • The Hawks and Stars each committed 18 fouls in the contest.
  • The Hawks were 17-26 from the free throw stripe (65.4%); The Stars were 14-17 (82.4%).
  • Bucci led the Hawks in playing time, playing all 40 minutes. Markley and Mackenzie Coleman each played 39 minutes for the Stars.
