Scarlet Hawks Make Late Push - Beat Alverno in Women's Basketball

Chicago, Ill. - Playing an Alverno team they defeated in double-overtime two weeks ago in Milwaukee, the Illinois Tech women's basketball team battled from behind late to defeat the Inferno 47-44 Thursday night at the Keating Sports Center. The Scarlet Hawks improved to 5-14 overall(2-11 NACC). The Inferno dropped to 1-17 overall(0-11 NACC).

Deriniece Moton scored with 4:43 remaining in the fourth quarter to allow the Hawks to regain the lead they had lost in the final minute of the third period. 

Another basket by Moton, and free throws by Julia Bucci and Allie Sillo down the stretch sealed the victory for the Hawks. Free throws chances proved to tip the game in the Hawks favor, as they shot 19 free throws compared to only two free throws for Alverno.

The Hawks held the lead at the end of the first quarter 15-12, but the two teams flipped the scoring in the second quarter, allowing Alverno to go into the break tied with Illinois Tech at 27-27.

Both teams struggled with turnovers and scoring in the third period, until the Inferno scored the first basket of the quarter with 3:41 remaining to take a 29-27 lead. Alverno closed out the third quarter leading 36-32.

 

Scarlet Hawk Standouts

  • Bucci paced the Hawks with 22 points and added 12 rebounds.
  • Moton scored 16 points and led the team in rebounds with 13.
  • Sillo added seven points and four rebounds.

Inferno Watch

  • Lauryn Hilliard led the Inferno with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Angie Reutgen added 10 points and four rebounds.

Inside the Box Score

  • The Hawks shot 17% from three point range (2-12); the Inferno shot 16% (3-19).
  • The Hawks had 8 fouls versus 15 fouls for the Inferno in the contest.
  • The Hawks shot 68% from the free throw line on 13 of 19 shooting. Alverno was 1-2 for 50%.
  • Moton led the Hawks in playing time with 40 minutes. Hilliard and Morgan Golabowski each played 37 minutes for Alverno.
