Women's Basketball Overpowered by Marian

Chicago, Ill. - The Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks women's basketball team was overpowered on Saturday by the Marian University Sabres in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference contest. The Hawks (5-11, 3-7) were unable to keep up as the Sabres (5-12, 4-6) came out hot to begin the contest. 

First Half (Marian 39 - Illinois Tech 16)

  • The Sabres began the game with a 7-0 run before Grace Goodnough got the Hawks first basket at 7:18. A Kaya Jones layup made it a 13-4 game in favor of the Sabres with 5:48 on the clock. From there, neither side recorded another basket until Goodnough made a layup with 2:44 remaining. The first quarter ended with the Sabres going on a 10-1 run to take a 23-7 lead over the Hawks. 

  • Goodnough opened the second quarter with a layup before the Sabres made one of their own to take a 25-9 lead. Another scoreless streak would happen until 6:22 when Camden Joko made a 3-pointer. The Sabres picked up 15 points compared to the Hawks 4 to close out the quarter. Entering halftime, the Hawks trailed the Sabres 39-16

Second Half (Marian 41 - Illinois Tech 40)

  • 9 points went in favor of the Sabres to begin the third quarter. Chloe Churilla broke the Sabres scoring run with a layup at 8:14 to make it 47-18 in favor of the Sabres. The Sabres had their biggest quarter of the game, picking up 27 points while holding the Hawks to 10. At the end of the quarter, the visitors led 66-26. 

  • A 3-pointer opened up the fourth quarter for the Sabres, giving them a 43-point lead, the largest of the game. The Hawks then went on a 11-0 run between 8:57 and 6:26. After a Sabre basket at 6:03, the Hawks went on a 11-2 run between 5:50 and 4:14. Here, the Hawks trailed the Sabres 73-48. With 2:21 remaining, the Hawks closed out the game with a 8-3 run. The fourth quarter marked the Hawks largest quarter of the game as they secured 30 points and held the Sabres to 14. In the end, the Sabres defeated the Hawks 80-56

Scarlet Hawk Standouts

  • Grace Goodnough led the Hawks with 14 points, 7 rebounds. Goodnough added 1 assist and 1 steal. 

  • Julia Bucci had 12 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block and led the team with 3 steals. 

Sabres Standouts

  • Paris Harris led the Sabres with 16 points. Harris finished with 2 rebounds.

  • Kiara Williams recorded a double-double with 11 points, 18 rebounds. Williams led in blocks with 3. Harris also had 1 assist and 1 steal. 

  • Lexi Brakebush followed with 11 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal.

Inside the Box Score

  • The Hawks finished 21-of-64 (32.8%) from the field, 7-of-31 (22.6% ) from three, and 7-of-11 (63.6%) in free throws. The Sabres went 32-of-67 (47.8%), 4-of-14 (28.6%), and 12-of-14 (85.7%) respectively.

  • The Sabres outrebounded the Hawks 48-33.

  • Both sides had 17 turnovers and picked up 17 points off turnovers. 

  • The Hawks had 26 points in the paint while the Sabres had 38
