Scarlet Hawks Fall to Monmouth in MWLC Opener

CHICAGO—The 2020 Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference opener pitted the Illinois Institute of Technology Scarlet Hawks at home for a Saturday-morning bout against Monmouth College (Ill.). Four lead changes occurred in the contest, but it was the Scots who didn't find themselves in a hole for the remainder of the contest when Kara-Jade Gordon's goal with 26:24 left in the second half kick started a 5-1 run that grew their cushion to 10-7 at the 21:19 mark. It was enough arsenal for Monmouth to hold onto a 13-11 victory over Illinois Tech.

The Scarlet Hawks fall to 0-2, 0-1 MWLC while Monmouth improves to 1-2, 1-1 MWLC.

Shanie Scoles was all over the scoresheet for the Scarlet Hawks with a team-high seven goals, 17 shots, 14 shots on goal and nine draw controls. Mallory Tognetti netted a hat trick and a game-high seven ground balls while Lucy Kegley contributed a goal for Illinois Tech.

The Scarlet Hawks outshot Monmouth 34-32. Kara-Jade Gordon found her name on the scoresheet with a game-high eight goals and five caused turnovers along with five ground balls, four draw controls and 13 shots for the Scots.

Elizabeth Zia and Jessica Cochis combined to make 10 saves in net for the Scarlet Hawks, while Olivia Matlock registered 15 stops in the complete-game win for Monmouth. Five yellow cards were assessed in the contest, with three of them being assessed to Illinois Tech.

The Scarlet Hawks will return to action on Wednesday, March 18 when they host Concordia Chicago at 6:00 p.m.
