Undefeated Alma Defeats Women’s Lacrosse

Alma, Mich. - For their fifth straight away game, the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks women's lacrosse team found themselves over in Alma, Michigan as they took on the Alma College Scots in the final non-conference game of the 2023 season.

The Hawks (2-6) fell behind early to the undefeated Scots (7-0). Leading the whole way, the Scots recorded a 20-4 victory over the Hawks. 

First Quarter (Alma 9 - Illinois Tech 1)

  • Quickly, the Scots took a 5-0 lead over the Hawks. Back-to-back free positions shots gave the Scots a 2-0 lead, followed by two goals from Sam Peterson to make it 4-0. Rileigh McGeorge made it 5-0 with a goal at 7:56.

  • Faith Busche put the Hawk on the board at 6:25 with an unassisted goal. 

  • The Scots scored four more goal by the end of the first quarter. Sarah Bolinger scored at 5:06, McGeorge scored a free position at 1:58. Kristen Browne scored with 47 seconds remaining and Lauren Kenny followed with 18 seconds on the clock. At the end of the first quarter the Scots led the Hawks 9-1.

Second Quarter (Alma 5 - Illinois Tech 1)

  • Peterson began the second quarter with a goal for the Scots.

  • Kelly Hitchcock scored an unassisted goal nine seconds after the Scots goal at 14:26. Here, the Hawks trailed 10-2.

  • Peterson would go on to score three more goals in the second quarter at 13:28, 4:39, and 3:31. In Between Peterson's goals at 5:36, McGeorge scored for the Scots. At halftime, the Scots led 14-2. 

Third Quarter (Alma 2 - Illinois Tech 2)

  • Browne opened the quarter with an assisted goal to make it 15-2. 

  • Busche picked up her second of the game at 10:14.

  • Browne then scored another goal at 4:54, this time unassisted.

  • Alison Yurchak gave the Hawks their final goal of the game at the very end of the quarter with no time left. 

Fourth Quarter (Alma 4 - Illinois Tech 0)

  • During the final quarter of play, the Scots scored all of the goals. The goals came throughout the quarter at 10:00, 4:48, 2:57, and 1:46. At the final whistle, the Hawks fell to the Scots 20-4.

 Scarlet Hawk Standouts

  • Faith Busche led the Hawks with 2 goals. Bushche finished the game with 5 shots, all of which were on goal, 5 ground balls, 2 draw controls, and 1 caused turnover. 

  • Kelly Hithcock tallied 1 goal from 8 shots, 3 on goal, as well as 3 ground balls, 6 draw controls, and 3 caused turnovers.

  • Alison Yurchak also picked up 1 goal. 

Scots Standouts

  • Sam Peterson scored 7 goals to lead the Scots. Peterson finished with 8 shots, 7 on goal, 2 assists, 2 ground balls, 2 draw controls, and 1 caused turnover. 

  • Rileigh McGeorge had 4 goals from 5 shots, 4 on goal, as well as 3 ground balls, 8 draw controls, and 1 caused turnover.

  • Kristen Browne finished with 4 goals from 13 shots, 7 on goal. Browne also recorded 3 assists and 2 ground balls. 

Inside the Box Score

  • Alma finished with 52 shots, 35 on goal versus Illinois Tech's 20 shots, 11 on goal. 

  • In ground balls, the Scots led 24-17.

  • The Hawks were 14-for-18 in clears compared to the Scots 19-for-22.

  • The Scots held the advantage in draw controls, 14-11.
