Concordia Chicago Tops Women’s Lacrosse

Chicago, Ill. - In their second to last home game, the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks women's lacrosse team welcomed the Concordia University Chicago Cougars to Stuart Field for a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) contest. 

The Cougars (4-7, 3-1) came out hot against the Hawks (2-10, 0-4), putting up five goals before the Hawks scored one. The Cougars would never look back as they led the Hawks for the entirety of the contest. In the end, the Hawks dropped the home contest 20-9.  

First Quarter (Concordia Chicago 5 - Illinois Tech 1)

  • To begin the game, the visiting Cougars took the early lead and never looked back as they scored five goals between the 10:53 and 5:45 mark in the first quarter.

  • The Hawks were able to get one goal on the board before the end of the quarter at 5:19. Faith Busche would be the one to find the back of the net, unassisted. 

Second Quarter (Concordia Chicago 5 - Illinois Tech 3)

  • Alison Yurchak scored the Hawks second goal in a man-up situation off a Busche assist just 30 seconds into the start of the second quarter to make the score 5-2. 

  • The Cougars then scored two goals, at 13:03 and 11:44 respectively, taking a 6-2 lead. 

  • An unassisted Kelly Hitchcock goal then came at the 9:50 mark for the Hawks. 

  • Two more goals came in favor of the visiting team at 5:55 and 4:28.

  • Hitchcock then scored from a Busche assist with 3:43 remaining. 

  • The Cougars closed out the quarter with a goal at the 3:15 mark. At halftime, the Cougars led the Hawks 10-4. 

Third Quarter (Concordia Chicago 6 - Illinois Tech 3)

  • In a man-down situation, the Cougars were able to find the back of the net for te first goal of the third quarter. 

  • The Hawks then scored back-to-back goals. At 9:51 Busche scored an unassisted goal. Judai Smith then followed with an unassisted goal immediately after at the 9:25 mark. 

  • Extending their lead, the Cougars went on a 4-goal scoring streak with goals scored at 8:15, 7:29, 4:18, and 3:24. Here, the Cougars led the hAWKS 15-6. 

  • With 1:01 remaining on the clock, Hitchcock scored her third of the game for a hat-trick, this time unassisted to make the score 15-7. 

  • 17 seconds remained when the Cougars scored the final goal of the quarter. 

Fourth Quarter (Concordia Chicago 4 - Illinois Tech 2)

  • Three goals were scored in favor of the Cougars at the beginning of the fourth quarter. The goals were scored at 13:28, 9:52, and 8:15 as the Cougars took a 19-7 lead. 

  • In two free position attempts, the Hawks would score their final goals of the game. Busche scored the first at the 5:59 mark before Hitchcock scored her fourth of the game with 3:30 remaining. 

  • The Cougars closed out the game with one more goal as 1:17 remained on the clock. At the final horn, the Cougars handed the Hawks a 20-9 loss. 

 Scarlet Hawk Standouts

  • Kelly Hitchcock led the Hawks in goals, scoring 4 throughout the match. Hitchcock finished with 8 shots, 5 on goal, 4 ground balls, 13 draw controls, and 1 caused turnover. 

  • Faith Busche scored a hat-trick during the contest. Busche tallied 2 assists, 7 shots, 4 on goal, 1 ground balls, and 5 draw controls. 

Cougars Standouts

  • Rylee Orestein led the Cougars in goals and assists, recording 6 and 3 respectively. Orenstein finished with 11 shots, 10 on goal, 3 ground balls, 3 draw controls, and 1 caused turnover. 

  • Brynn Beetow tallied 4 goals. All 5 of Beetow's shots were on goal.

  • Jessica Parker and Kelli Pietrowski both scored a hat-trick for the Cougars. Parker finished with 1 assist, 7 shots, 5 on goal, 4 ground balls, 8 draw controls, and 1 caused turnover. Pietrowski ended the game with 1 assist, 7 shots, 5 on goal, 2 ground balls, 4 and draw controls.

Inside the Box Score

  • The Cougars outshot the Hawks 37-24, with the Cougars recording 30 on goal versus the Hawks 13.

  • The Hawks edge the Cougars in ground balls 22-21.

  • 18 draw controls went in favor of the Hawks.

Two games remain on the Hawks schedule before the conclusion of the 2023 season. On Saturday, the Hawks will travel to Beloit, Wis. to take on the Beloit College Buccaneers. The NACC game is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
