Chicago, Ill. - Illinois Tech and the University of Chicago, two teams separated by 24 blocks, faced off for the sixth time Thursday night. For the first time in Scarlet Hawks women's soccer history, the Hawks defeated the Maroons. The 3-0 victory at Stuart Field marked the final non-conference game of the 2022 season. Kayla Smith, Jamie Griggs, and Clàudia Martí Fanlo provided the three goals to seal the victory over the Maroons. With the win, the Hawks move to 14-2-2 overall, and sit at 7-1-2 in Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference play.

How It Happend

  • In the 18th minute of action, the Hawks scored their first of the match. Smith gave the Hawks the 1-0 lead off a Martí Fanlo assist. The goal came when Martí Fanlo received the ball at the top of the 18 yard-box, turned and passed the ball off to Smith. Smith used her first touch to throw off the Maroon defenders before shooting the ball. Smith's shot went right past the defender and into the opposite side netting.

  • Then, just 48 seconds before halftime, Griggs found the back of the net for the match's second goal. After receiving a corner kick, the Hawks sent the ball into the center of the 18-yard box. A deflection after the initial attempt landed right in front of Griggs. Griggs was able to beat the incoming defender by getting a touch on the ball, sending the ball right above the Maroons goalkeeper to build the Hawks lead. After the first 45 minutes of action, the Hawks led the Maroons 2-0.

  • Martí Fanlo joined in on the goal scoring action seven minutes into the second half for the final goal of the contest. Katelyn Holcomb assisted the play. In her own defensive half, Holcomb passed a ball through the Maroons defense to where Martí Fanlo was running. Meeting the ball at the top of the 18-yard box, Martí Fanlo used a one-touch shot to nutmeg the goalkeeper and give the Hawks a 3-0 lead and ultimate victory.
